Admissions FAQ

Where is Gowanus, anyway?

Gowanus is a neighborhood in Brooklyn centered on the Gowanus Canal, and conveniently located on the planet Earth.

If the law school is in Brooklyn, why is it called “Manhattan Law School?”

The law school is named for Jasper Q. Manhattan. (You can read more about him here). It is not a “feeble, yet surprisingly effective, effort to misdirect students into attending law school on the shit-slicked banks of a Superfund site,” as one publication (since sued into bankruptcy) described it.

Are you really a law school?

Does anyone ask Harvard whether it is really a law school?

How much is the application fee, and when is the deadline?

Applications are considered on a rolling basis. Our entering class is generally filled as of a few weeks after the start of the academic year. To start this coming August, we recommend you send your application materials in by the end of this coming August.

The application fee is $1,000.

What are the eligibility requirements for applying to the Manhattan Law School J.D. program?

You are eligible to apply if you have a pulse in August of the year you intend to enroll at MLS. To comply with American Bar Association regulations, you must also take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) no later than December of the previous year.  You must also have proof of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, but if necessary our admissions office can refer you to a list of sources from whom you can purchase such proof.

What is the average LSAT score of last year’s admitted applicants?

That information is confidential. We encourage you to visit the school, however, where you can purchase that information from scalpers outside our admissions office.

How should I prepare for law school?

The Manhattan Law School faculty has no official requirements with respect to the content of pre-law education, but we find that students who are able to read have a far easier time in law school than those who cannot.

Does Manhattan Law School offer any joint degree programs?

MLS offers a joint degree program with the Gowanus School of Public Health (JD/MPH), located inside the Gowanus Canal.  We also offer a joint degree program with Hamburger University (JD/FRYER) if your career plans include work in the fast food industry.

How important is the LSAT?

It’s everything as far as how you should feel about yourself and your worth as a human being.

In the context of your admission application, however, it is helpful in making comparisons between applicants, but we also consider your physical attractiveness, your family’s net worth, the size of your genitals, and your race.

If I scored poorly, should I retake the LSAT?

Only if you are the kind of person whose self-esteem depends on the objective evaluation of a rigorous percentile-based national testing system.

What if I applied to MLS in a previous year?

If you applied, and were not accepted, you should consider applying again if can show an improvement in your LSAT scores, have had an interesting life experience, or can pay the application fee in cash.

Are application fee waivers available?

Only in cases of accidental billing error.

How many letters of recommendations does MLS require? Can I submit more?

We require two letters.  We will accept no more than two letters.  Send us two letters.  Three.

How should I approach my personal statement?

You sound like exactly the type of student your classmates are going to hate.

What is the ideal length for a personal statement?

Just go to medical school already.

Are all applications read?

Pass.

Can I find out my status via email or over the phone?

No.

What if I have a disciplinary record?

Please don’t tell us.  It creates all sorts of problems.

What is your deferral policy?

We’ll tell you next year.
